Colle Massari wins 2014 Gambero Rosso Winery of the Year
The 2014 awards for Italy’s leading wine publication, Gambero Rosso, are being announced throughout September and we are proud to announce that one of our wineries, Colle Massari, has just been awarded 2014 Italian Winery of the Year!
It’s a huge honour given the number of wineries in Italy, but especially considering that Colle Massari is from the little known Tuscan region of Montecucco. Monte whocco you ask?
Montecucco is nestled between Montalcino and Grosseto. The 350 hectare estate is situated at the foothills of Monte Amiata and is oriented towards the Tyrrhenian coast. Surrounded by a state forest, there are 83 hectares of vineyards, 22 of olive groves and 100 hectares of mixed crops. While Sangiovese is still very much at home here, the conditions – 320 metres above sea level and consistent ventilation (due partly to the estate’s proximity to the Tyrrhenian coast and partly to the 15% incline) – allow other varieties like Ciliegiolo, Montepulciano and Vermentino to thrive. Production is based on organic principles (guaranteed and certified) and winemaking is carried out in the architectural award-winning four storey gravity feed winery.
Great work team Colle Massari.
