Winemaker: Mattia Vezzola
Scale and charm seldom go together, yet in Bellavista’s case they are perfectly compatible. This remarkable operation, masterminded by owner Vittorio Moretti and Italy’s newly-crowned Oenologist of the Year, Mattia Vezzola, combines grandeur and star quality with familiarity and simplicity. The estate’s larger than life facilities, kilometres of underground cellars, computer-controlled operations and 455 surrounding hectares of Franciacorta woods and vineyards (184 hectares under vine) leave you awestruck. So too does organic production, Marmonnier upright presses, in-the-bottle secondary fermentation for all bottle sizes (no decanting here) – all at the very cutting edge of sparkling wine production. Recently, Mattia implemented yet another quality phase, increasing the élevage, on average, from 36 to 48 months so as to achieve the greatest possible quality consistency and personality.
Bellavista’s quality has been recognised by Italy’s Gambero Rosso with 17 Tre Bicchieri, most recently for the 2002 Gran Cuvee Brut, describing their range as “wines of incredible elegance and finesse”. No wonder Robert Parker thinks it rivals Champagne; no wonder Bellavista is, quite simply, one of the world’s great sparkling wines.
What’s new: Gambero Rosso’s Vini d’Italia named Mattia 2008 ‘L’Enologo dell’Anno. Bravo Mattia.
