Brancaia

Winemaker: Barbara Widmer & Carlo Ferrini

Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer, with daughter Barbara and son-in-law Martin, run this property better than clockwork. Podere La Brancaia is one of Tuscany’s top wine-growing estates, each year winning national and international awards. The new winery is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area at Poppi, in Radda in Chianti and draws on its own fruit from Poppi and La Brancaia (Castellina). All vineyards have the ideal hillside location, facing south/southwest or southeast at 230-400 metres above sea level, planted to 6000 vines per hectare on lean, stony, calcareous soil. Yields are naturally below 5-5½ tonnes per hectare, giving Barbara and consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini great ammunition in the three storey gravity-feed winery.

SuperTuscan ‘Il Blu’ made its debut with the 1988 vintage and has since garnered nine Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri. A blend of 50% Sangiovese, 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 18-20 months in French barriques (2/3 new), it is a lush, decadent, dripping-with-black-fruit, can’t-keep-your-hands-off type of wine that drinks well in its youth but marks time in the bottle. Sensational wine; sensational package.

Chianti Classico is produced as others would a Riserva and rewards medium-term cellaring.
