Brancaia in Maremma

Ilatraia

Winemaker: Barbara Widmer & Carlo Ferrini

Building on the phenomenal success of Brancaia in Chianti Classico comes the Widmer family’s latest acquisition, Brancaia in Maremma. The winemaking team is the same, with Barbara Widmer and Carlo Ferrini bringing their expertise and philosophy to the operation, both keen to realise the fantastic potential of the Maremma and to produce a wine to rival the quality of its big brother, Il Blu. Established in 1998, the estate lies 11 kilometres from the sea, southeast of Grosseto, at altitudes of between 75 and 175 metres above sea level with a south/southwest aspect. The 34 hectares of hillside vineyards are cultivated according to organic practices and planted to Sangiovese and Bordeaux varietals Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, plus a smattering of others.
Ilatraia is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese and 10% Petit Verdot, matured in French oak (50% new) for 18 months. The wine is a real thoroughbred, immaculately packaged, with all the hallmarks of the Brancaia stable. It is a dark, brooding stallion of a wine, taut and muscular with rich fruit, lively notes of alpine herb and spices and built to go the distance.
