Colle Massari

Winemaker: Maurizio Castelli

ColleMassari was founded in 1998 and is located in Montecucco in the province of Grosetto, a newly promoted DOC nestled between the historical areas of Brunello and Morellino. The estate is situated at the foothills of Monte Amiata and while Sangiovese is still very much at home, the conditions – 320 metres above sea level and consistent ventilation (due partly to the estate’s proximity to the Tyrrhenian coast and partly to the 15% incline) – allow other varieties like Ciliegiolo, Montepulciano and Vermentino to thrive.

Production is based on organic principles (guaranteed and certified) and winemaking is carried out in the architectural award-winning four storey gravity feed winery.

Depending on the wine, fermentation takes place in truncated cone-shaped vats or temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Again, depending on the wine, aging takes place for 12 - 18 months in barriques of 225 litres or tonneaux of 500, and in barrels of Slavonian oak holding 40 hectolitres.
This year’s inaugural Australian release sees the introduction of:

Rigoleto, Montecucco Rosso DOC: 70% Sangiovese, 15% Ciliegiolo, 15% Montepulciano. From vineyards at 300m on soils of sandstone, tufaceous clays and calcareous marl. Vinified in open stainless steel vats for 20 - 25 days (manually stirred) with maceration at 27 - 30ºC and malolactic taking place before transfer to a mixture of second and third use barriques and tonneaux for 10 months maturation. Intense nose of blackberry fruit lifted by a pronounced spiciness. Full-bodied, round and smooth, but above all, delightful to drink.
