Conterno Fantino

Monforte d'Alba

Conterno Fantino

Winemakers: Guido & Fabio Fantino

Founded in 1982, Conterno Fantino testifies to the talent and vision of viticulturist Claudio Conterno and his partner oenologist Guido Fantino. These great wines start in exceptional vineyard sites at Monforte and are lovingly nurtured in the state-of-the-art winery at Bricco Bastia. This location is scenically set, dominating the most ancient section of Monforte and overlooked by the majestic sweep of the alps.

The two Barolos are both from Monforte’s Ginestra cru. The vineyard is 300 metres above sea level with a vine density of 5000 vines per hectare. ‘Vigna del Gris’ is from southeasterly exposed vines and sandier soil, favouring delicacy and elegance, while ‘Sori Ginestra’ is southerly exposed on marly, calcareous terrain, conducive to remarkable structure and cellar life. Vinification and élevage are the same, with 24 months in French oak barriques and a year in the bottle. Guido compares 2004 to 1978 and says they are “vibrant, balanced wines from perfect grapes. They have a very fresh structure and excellent balance and should be long-lived”.

Dolcetto is from the ‘Bastia’ cru, a vineyard located next to the winery. Barbera ‘Vignota’, barrique aged for 10 months, is intensely perfumed with lush red cherry fruit and a rich, ripe palate balanced by fresh acidity and a beautiful finish.
