Fuligni
Montalcino
Winemaker: Roberto Guerrini & Paolo Vagaggini
Founded in 1923 around a Medici villa and a country convent of the Renaissance, the Fuligni estate is co-owned by Roberto Guerrini Fuligni and his aunt, Maria Flora Fuligni. Roberto, Professor of Criminal Law at Siena University, styles the wines with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini. The estate covers a total 100 hectares with 10 under vine, mostly devoted to Montalcino’s own Sangiovese. The rest is planted with Merlot, which complements the Brunello grape in the SJ blend.
The older vineyards are 350 to 440 metres above sea level, mainly southeasterly exposed on stony/clayey, hillside galestro marls. The soil is low in organic components, therefore conducive to minuscule yields, and crops are further reduced by the vines’ age, density, severe pruning and green harvest. The grapes are vinified separately according to cru and they are aged in the restored convent. Consistently judged among Tuscany’s finest, Fuligni produces aromatic, balanced Brunello, bursting at the seams with plum and cherry fruit sustained by firm, full structure and polished tannins.
What’s new: Antonio Galloni rates the 2003 Brunello di Montalcino as “unquestionably one of the stars of the vintage. Made in a style that captures elements of both traditional and modern styles, it presents a very attractive array of ripe red fruits, smoke, tar and tobacco and toasted oak on a firm, classically-built frame. While it isn’t quite as fresh as some of the other Brunellos from this part of the zone, its seamless texture and silky tannins make for a beautifully-balanced wine to enjoy now and over the next dozen years or so. This is just about as good as it gets in the tricky 2003 vintage.”Visit the wine-maker's website
