Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana

Sanlucar de Barrameda

La Gitana

Winemaker: Javier Hidalgo

Viticulture: Organic

Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana, founded in 1792 in Sanlucar de Barrameda, is one of the last independent family-owned Sherry producers. The sixth generation, led by Javier Hidalgo, oversees the production of one of Spain's true gems – and, the quintessential 'tapa' wine – Manzanilla Sherry.

Manzanilla is unique, inasmuch as it can only be produced in Sanlucar, where the coming together of the Guadalquivir River and the Atlantic Ocean promote a particular climate. The resultant mild and humid conditions allow for the sherry 'flor' to grow on the wines' surface year round during maturation, (elsewhere, this stops in Winter and Summer), thereby promoting the finest and most appetizing of dry sherries. This character is best described by a La Gitana tasting note . . . "pale, bone dry and delicate with a yeasty apple/iodine nose and a tangy fresh finish". Best served chilled.

The care and attention the Hidalgo family devotes to La Gitana is also very much in evidence across the rest of the range, where organic viticulture and traditional production methods realise impeccable quality, quality that is tempered by availability (PX is now 'on allocation' to us) and quality that is recognised by the numerous international awards the company has received.
