Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana
Sanlucar de Barrameda
Winemaker: Javier Hidalgo
Just when you thought that Hidalgo couldn’t win any more trophies (three in two years at the International Wine Challenge), this year sees the firm being awarded the Decanter World Wine Award for the best dessert style sherry for their Pedro Ximenez. Recently re-packaged and re-badged PX ‘Triana’ in honour of Rodrigo de Triana, right-hand man to Christopher Columbus on the famous ‘voyage of Discovery’, the wine is as old, rich and unctuous as ever, resembling bottled history. Discover it for yourself.
Next in line to receive the packaging makeover – new proprietary bottles and striking labels – are the Amontillado ‘Napoleon’ and Oloroso Seco ‘Faraon’. Literally translating as ‘Pharoah’, in gypsy lingo, the Faraon is the head of the clan. This head of the clan is aged and strong, in complete contrast to the youthful and delicate gypsy herself, La Gitana Manzanilla, which continues to be the finest of its type – bone dry and delicate, with a salty tang. Served ice cold, it is the definition of refreshment in a glass.
