Winemakers: Luisa Marchetti & Armando Cordero

This historic estate, dating back to the mid-1800s, is now being run by the fifth generation wine-making team of Luisa and Manuel Marchetti, who are maintaining the family’s dedication to tradition and quality. Founded by Luisa’s great grandfather, the estate was the very first in the area to designate single vineyards on its labels, as early as the 1950s. Discipline, attention to detail and low yields in their 17 hectares of Langhe vineyards, combined with innovation and modern techniques in the winery, deliver wines that are at once as traditional as they are modern-edged. The flagship, single vineyard La Morra Barolos are from the two celebrated crus of Brunate and La Serra, renowned for their voluptuous, embracing style and superb longevity. Of the 2004 vintage, Manuel puts it on par with 1999 and 2001. “Maturation was perfect, complete and simultaneous for sugars and polyphenols. The wines show extraordinary harmony and colour intensity with sensational tannins – very sweet, soft and complex without being aggressive”.

Brunate is typically muscular, earthy and austere, while the La Serra is understated elegance, softer and rounder, with velvet-wrapped intensity. The ever-consistent Moscato d’Asti is wonderfully fresh and delicate, with pure white grape flavours.

What’s new: This year we welcome two new wines. Arneis, a variety that has made a comeback from near extinction in the 1970s since its elevation to DOC status in 1989, is delicately aromatic with fresh fruit, honey and acacia and unfortunately, it’s also very limited. In addition, we couldn’t resist some Langhe Rosso for ourselves to enjoy: a beautifully-balanced and complex blend of 60% Barbera, 30% Nebbiolo (from Barolo vineyards) and 10% Syrah.
