Montevetrano

Winemaker: Riccardo Cotarella

Montevetrano is something of a cult estate, a ‘SuperCampanian’ owned and operated by the dynamic Silvia Imparato, with the wine made by the famed oenologist Riccardo Cotarella. The estate makes only one wine, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Aglianico that has garnered 12 Tre Bicchieri (including our current release) since the 1993 vintage. In 2008, Montevetrano confirmed its superstar status with the top award from all four of Italy’s major wine guides, one of only five wines to do so.

The wine is something of a monster – not huge as such, but pretty wild all the same. It is purple/ruby with intense aromas of small wild berry fruits and ripe cherry, lifted by tobacco, spice and vanilla. The fruit is ripe, soft, warm and enveloping, yet the palate has a solid structure, finishing long and even a little imperious, with a final flick of new-ish oak. Great wine in anybody’s language.
