Poggerino

Winemaker: Piero Lanza

The historic Poggerino property was once part of the estate of Prince Ginori Conti, a member of one of Florence’s oldest families. Today the 11 hectare estate situated at Radda, in the heart of Chianti Classico, is run by highly dedicated brother and sister team, Piero and Benedetta Lanza, who took over from their father in the mid-eighties. Piero Lanza strives to produce a wine that best expresses the typicity of Sangiovese, while reflecting the individuality of Poggerino’s terroir. The attention to detail in the vineyard verges on fanatical, with bio-dynamic farming, careful clonal selection, close planted vines, nitrogenous cover crops, extensive canopy management and hand picking to ensure the best possible combination of concentration, acidity and ripe tannins. Wild yeast fermentation, modern winemaking techniques and 12 months in French oak barrique and tonneaux complete the process.

The resulting wine reflects these labours and is a beautifully balanced and perfumed style of Chianti with floral notes, spice and ripe red cherry and berry fruit, the structured palate rounded by sweet persistent tannin.

The 2006 is, in our opinion, Piero’s best wine to date and a vintage that will reward 10-plus years in the cellar if you can resist enjoying it now. The Riserva is sourced from the rocky galestro Bugialla vineyard that is naturally low yielding and produces grapes of great concentration. Made in small quantities and only in the best vintages, the wine is aged in new barriques for 18 months, with a further 16 months in bottle. Dark ruby in colour with a nose of wild berries, raspberries, licorice and tobacco, the tannins are full and round with substantial structure and aging potential.
