Winemaker: Francesco & Luca Martini di Cigala

San Giusto a Rentennano was originally a monastery of Cistercian nuns, fortified in 1204 by the Florentines as their boundary with Siena. Today, the underground vaults built as part of the fortification are used as the aging cellars. For centuries it was owned by the Ricasoli family of neighbouring Brolio, passing to the Martini di Cigala family in 1957. Now the 160 hectare estate, with 30 hectares of vineyards, is run by Francesco, Luca and Elisabetta. The vineyards enjoy exceptional exposure with considerable day and night temperature differences and the terrain is composed of various soils rich in minerals. The farming methods remain largely manual and exclusively organic.

Chianti Classico is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo and is brimming with bright fruit, floral notes and an elegant palate. Le Baroncole is 97% Sangiovese and 3% Canaiolo aged for 16-20 months in French oak barriques with perfumed floral notes, chewy dark red fruit and excellent balance and length. Percarlo is 100% Sangiovese selected from grapes across six cru vineyards that form the best expression of the terroir of San Giusto: concentrated fruit with a rich, powerful palate that will reward cellaring. La Ricolma, 100% Merlot, is full of dark, rich fruit with notes of plum and chocolate. Finally, the Vin San Giusto is one of the best Vin Santos in Tuscany, exhibiting nutty fruit with toffee and salted caramel and an incredibly long finish.

Unfortunately demand well exceeds supply and we have no wine available until new vintages are released in 2009.
