Teruzzi & Puthod
San Gimignano
Winemaker: Alberto Bramini
Enrico Teruzzi and Carmen Puthod established their winery in 1974 and were the pioneers of the area’s new renaissance. They led a quality revolution with avant-garde methods of vinification and élevage, being the first to use temperature control and barrique élevage for structured whites as well as reds. The local variety, Vernaccia, is said to be one of Italy’s oldest, dating back to the third century B.C. and, in 1966, it became Italy’s first DOC wine. The variety is pale in colour, with delicate honeysuckle, citrus and floral notes and a typical touch of bitterness that refreshes the palate and encourages the appetite.
Terre di Tufi, the original ‘White SuperTuscan’, is a blend of mostly Vernaccia with Chardonnay, Malvasia and Vermentino, barrique-fermented and oak-aged for four to five months. It exhibits exotic aromas of pineapple, apple and vanilla with a full body and Vernaccia’s characteristic zesty finish. In 2005, the Campari group purchased the estate from its eponymous founders, embracing the Teruzzi and Puthod philosophy and maintaining personnel.
