Ischia is a volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, measuring 46 square kilometres and almost entirely mountainous, about 30 kilometres from the city of Naples.

Pasquale Cenatiempo is fourth generation Ischitana and biodynamically farms four hectares of grapes over eleven separate plots across three communes, but mostly in Serrara Fontana.   This is the most southerly zone and also the highest and the conditions – green tufa soil high in pomice, phosphorous and potassium, lots of sun and cool evenings – are perfect conditions for Biancolella, the islands main white grape. Ian d’Agata describes Biancolella wines as “always golden tinged, with strong white flower and thyme aromas, flavours of fresh herbs, spearmint, grapefruit, oregano and a noticeable saline quality”.

The grapes are handpicked and fermented in stainless steel with no malolactic and no wood. The wines display a distinct lemony saline note and are supple and fruity. Kalimera, the cru selection from a vineyard that receives the first of the morning light, shows extra depth and dimension with complex ripe pear, ginger, and bitter herbs. These are unique wines that are rarely seen on mainland Italy, let alone Australia!
