Giovanna Tantini is the original ‘garagista’ from Bardolino, beginning her winemaking at this small estate in Bardolino DOC, literally in her garage. With just eight vintages under her belt, Giovanna has almost single-handedly re-invented Bardolino. The region, on Lake Garda, is regarded as a poor cousin of neighbouring Valpolicella and the wine is often a light, rosato style. But not here!
Giovanna has 11 hectares of vineyards planted to Corvina, Rondinella, Cabernet and Merlot on glacial, gravelly and calcareous soil in low lying hills at 100 metres. Highly regarded Piedmontese agronomist Federico Curtaz is in charge of the vineyards, which are farmed organically. Winemaking is led by Tuscan oenologist Attilio Pagli and continues the attention to detail that begins in the vineyard.
The wine is a blend of Corvina (65%), Rondinella (30%) and Merlot (5%) and a portion of the vines’ canes are cut prior to harvest to boost concentration. The varieties are fermented separately with natural yeasts and then, after blending, the wine is aged in stainless steel for six months. That all sounds straightforward enough, but this is a wine that needs time in the bottle to evolve and unwind from its assertive frame. There is fleshy cherry and black forest fruit with pepper and spice, the palate vibrant and velvety. An incredibly versatile wine that drinks particularly well with red wine risotto or pasta with radicchio (classics of the region if you happen to visit).
