Poggerino

Radda in Chianti, Province of Siena

The historic Poggerino property was once part of the estate of Prince Ginori Conti, a member of one of Florence’s oldest families. Today the estate, situated at Radda in the heart of Chianti Classico, is run by highly-dedicated brother and sister team, Piero and Benedetta Lanza, who took over from their father in the mid-eighties.

Piero Lanza strives to produce a wine that best expresses the typicity of Sangiovese, while reflecting the individuality of Poggerino’s terroir.

The attention to detail in the vineyard verges on fanatical, with biodynamic farming, careful clonal selection, close planted vines, nitrogenous cover crops, extensive canopy management and hand picking to ensure the best possible combination of concentration, acidity and ripe tannins. Wild yeast fermentation, modern winemaking techniques and 12 months in French barrique and tonneaux complete the process.

The resulting wine reflects these labours and is a beautifully balanced and perfumed style of Chianti with floral notes, spice and ripe red cherry and berry fruit, the structured palate rounded by sweet persistent tannin. Piero’s Chianti cellars well for up to ten years, if you can resist enjoying it now.
