Matané is the Empsons’ new wine from Puglia, a joint project with friend Valentino Sciotti of Farnese and winemaker Filippo Baccalaro. The wines come from Salento, the southern-most part of the region, or ‘heel of the boot’. This peninsula is a land of extremes and dramatic beauty, stretching out between two seas. Lush, dark red soil bathed in Mediterranean sunlight; historic native varieties and superb old vineyards, constantly windswept by the salty air currents of the Adriatic and the Ionian seas.

The drought resistant Negroamaro vine is perfectly suited to Salento’s hot summers. Whilst the name Negroamaro might sound like one of those classic black and bitter Italian digestives, it is actually derived from two words meaning black: The Latin negro and the ancient Greek maru. And black it is, with intense red berry and blackcurrant fruit. Made without oak to preserve the wines freshness, the palate is velvety rich with sweet fruit and spice and a long finish.
