LAZIO
Cesanese, Malvasia di Candia & Bellone
For a long time Lazio’s wines were overlooked in favour of those from neighbouring regions but, with renewed interest in ‘cucina alla Romana’, it’s no surprise that Italian wine lovers are discovering the local grapes that best accompany suppli, abbacchio and the heavenly trio of pasta: cacio e pepe, carbonara and alla gricia. In some cases it’s a rediscovery, with Frascati once again gaining attention after decades in the doldrums, along with other white grapes Passerina, Bellone and Ottonese. Dozens of red varieties have been ‘imported’ to Lazio, but it’s the local Cesanese that is the real star, led by Damiano Ciolli.
